The trend gained attention when creator Siece Campbell posted a video sharing the items she keeps in her analog bag, explaining that this was her way of replacing a bad habit (using a cell phone) with a good habit (doing activities without a cell phone).

Rather than relying on willpower alone, analog bags work by eliminating friction. If your phone isn’t the most accessible option, you’re more likely to reach for a book, solve a puzzle, or work on a creative project. Keep one in the living room or next to your bed to keep from scrolling while watching TV or before bed. You can also take an analog bag to the coffee shop, the park, or on the train for your morning commute so you can do things without your phone while you’re out and about too.

How to make your own analog bag

It’s easy to follow the analog bag trend and create a trend that suits you and your interests. It’s best to use a bag that is easy to carry and has plenty of space, so choose a medium or large tote bag. No need to buy anything new—an old tote you keep at home will do! Separating items into different pockets or individual zip pockets can help keep items organized in your bag.

There is no limit to the number or types of items you can store in your analog bag. Activity books containing crossword puzzles or word searches are a great analog alternative to using the NYT app. If you prefer crafts, fill your bag with a set of watercolors, a sketchbook and pens, a coloring book and colored pencils, or an embroidery project. Books, magazines, or newspapers are also great items to keep to occupy your mind. If you want to replace some of your phone’s capabilities, include a notebook and planner in your bag so you don’t have to check your notes and calendar apps. You can even include a Polaroid camera if you want to take photos.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life or daily routine to spend less time searching. Sometimes it’s as simple as placing something comfortable, creative, or calming within arm’s reach.
