I’m Tired of Wearing Jeans—Here’s the Alternative I’m Looking for

There was a unanimous voice among my group chat: We’re out of jeans. Last week, it was leggings; the week before, sweaters. What that says about us, I’m not sure. But one thing I’m sure of? As the group’s stylist, it was up to me to find ways to overcome these new obstacles. (But I don’t mind, really, because in the words of Carrie Bradshaw, “it’s research.”) With everyone and their mom looking for bottoms to wear that aren’t the denim variety, I looked for jeans alternatives that could be seamlessly integrated into everyday outfits.

While it’s true that my denim collection has helped me through some of my worst wardrobe dilemmas to date, I can’t help but notice how much more stylish I feel when I wear things other than jeans. Managing to achieve a compliment-worthy look without my trusty Levi’s by my side was (literally) like completing the ultimate style test. However, that doesn’t mean combining non-denim clothes is something to be afraid of. These five denim alternatives are comfortable, easy, and the answer to all your morning “I can’t wear jeans today.”

5 Jeans Alternatives to Add to Your Winter Wardrobe

1. Corduroy Pants

For years, I avoided corduroy clothing for fear that I would look too much like my favorite fictional character, Paddington Bear. But lately, I’ve been feeling drawn to comfortable, nostalgic fabrics. Maybe it’s a call to feel more connected to my youth, or simply the fact that, according to my Instagram feed and the websites of all my favorite retailers, corduroy is undeniably back in style.

2. Long trousers

One thing I’m not tired of wearing yet? Long pants. Styling corporate attire outside the workplace—which I once thought was just a passing concept—is turning out to be a meaningful trend. That’s rightly so, as they have proven themselves to be just as comfortable and elegant. While you can keep it formal with a polished top and trench coat, you can also just as easily dress it up with a casual hoodie and t-shirt.

3. Midi Skirt

As sweater weather comes to a close and jacket season begins, my passion for wearing skirts usually takes a dive. But this year, more than ever, I want to keep my skirts in a twist just a little longer. (Namely because colored tights are back in trend, and there are so many great options.)

4. Knit Pants

If there’s one thing this year has taught me, it’s that anything can be renamed. But if you mention my pajama pants knitting the pants are wrong, so I don’t want to be right. While these are the most comfortable non-denim bottoms to make on the list, you don’t have to follow your top choice. Personally, I’d go for a striped turtleneck and an oversized blazer to accentuate the look. While you may feel like you just left the house wearing your favorite pajamas, this doesn’t have to be the case Look like it.

5. Utility Pants

Sure enough, my most worn pants this season are my trusty Gap cargo pants. Mainly because they’re easy to wear as jeans, but also because they add a bit of edginess to my softer, more feminine outfits. When styling them, I like to focus on choosing tops that will create a bit of juxtaposition, like a cashmere sweater and structured blazer, or a slim-fit tee and an oversized bomber.
