Why are girls with autism diagnosed late?

We used to think that more boys have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) than women. The numbers tell the story: four times more boys get a diagnosis than girls.

Because researchers are more focused on how ASD appears in girls, they have realized that the tariffs may not be much different. Because the symptoms are different, many girls and women are not diagnosed until later on. About 80% of girls with ASD did not receive diagnosis before they were 18 years old and therefore, they did not get support and assistance they could benefit.

Children’s Psychologist -Uva Health Evan J. Anderson, PhD, emphasized, “It’s easier to diagnose or not diagnosed.”

One of the biggest reasons for this is to cover up.

What is Masking?

Masking is a term that describes when someone hides autistic nature and behavior, so they appear more neurotypical. This is not always a conscious decision.

Many women – and some boys – began to cover up at the beginning of life and did not even know they did it. Masking helps neurodivergen children suitable, which is a strong motivator, especially among school-age children.

Some masking examples include:

• Mirroring facial expressions
• Forcing eye contact
• Rely on conversation scripts
• Hide special interests
• Copying Dresses and Appearances

Behavior Covering in Girls

Girls are much better at covering up. Sometimes this is because the expected behavior makes it easy to hide special interests. If your special interest is a horse or makeup, it is easy for adults to ignore as an age of age.

What they might miss is the level of interest. While neurotypical girls may be interested in the standard number, in autistic girls, it might be a loop of sustainable thinking. But it tends to be the topic of their conversation.

Girls are socialized since a young age to be more fun and “maintain peace.” Even when it came with personal discomfort. This makes them more willing to bear the topic of conversation they are not interested.

But Anderson said that there were some neurological sciences for that too. Girls tend to use more areas of the brain with mirror neurons. Mirror neurons allow us to imitate or copy the behavior of others – an important part of closing. But it also prevents girls from getting a diagnosis.

Masking costs

At some level, everyone is slightly covering up. In a job interview, you may dress better than usual. You might train your answers to questions long before. You might be more aware of your body and what message it sent.

But a job interview ends.

Imagine a job interview that began when you were a child. How long can you maintain it? A week? A month? Years?

What we know is that usually, around adolescents, energy for actions starts to wear. This can cause autistic girls starting to fight emotionally in other ways. These include:

• Blackout
• Depression
• Suicide ideas
• Anxiety

How do we identify girls faster?

Getting help for girls with autism means learning to recognize how various autism presentations. The behavior of stereotype autism, such as flapping hands, shake, walking, or less oriented to talking, often leads to recognition and early assistance. Symptoms of autism that are calmer, repeat phrases, spinning hair, or daydreaming, everything is more difficult to note.

But many mistakes are also rooted in stereotypes. What a boy can be easily recognized as a disorder of food intake that limits can be dismissed as anorexia nervosa in a girl who shows the same behavior.

Because more and more women are diagnosed and shared what their autism is when they are still children, we begin to better understand various presentations. And incorporate that knowledge into playback.

Get a diagnosis in adolescents

Because girls tend to be better at covering up, not infrequently they are not diagnosed until adolescence. Many parents are worried about their children knowing that they have autism at such a late age, and often follow a very emotional period. But on the contrary, most of the time, these children have suspected something different for a while. And an accurate diagnosis can help them find the words they have spent years looking for.

This also means finding a community, support, and strategy that can help them as they become adults. Often, a psychologist can be a useful tool for your child because they explore what their diagnosis means, and meaningless, for them.

Another psychologist or mental health professional can also help your child with any depression or anxiety they might feel.

Educate yourself about your child’s autism

But for teenagers who are late are diagnosed, sometimes parents who need help to understand the new diagnosis of their children. And because your child is still a teenager, you may already have tension in your relationship.

Learning and educating yourself about autism may seem scary. But you already have the best resources in the world in your own home. “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism,” Anderson said.

Books, memoirs, and other first hand accounts might be useful. They also show that you try, which your child might be appreciated. But in the end, your child is the only one that can help you fully understand what they need and what they experience.

Consistent support & acceptance

You are a parent. It is understandable if you are afraid of how the outside world looks at your child and their diagnosis. But adding pressure to match the standard may be dangerous.

Conversely, guiding them towards opportunities to express themselves also encourage them to try new experiences can help for long -term mental health. But like all things, this movement is easier for children when they have a strong foundation of support.
