How to Make “The World’s Healthiest Smoothie” at Home

LA’s Erewhon, the luxury grocer known for its $20 celebrity smoothies, has built an empire in cool girl drinks. So what happens when he teams up with longevity expert and functional medicine doctor Dr. Mark Hyman and his health platform Function? Apparently, the Healthiest Smoothie in the World? Yes, that’s what they call it, and this question mark was created deliberately by them—because we know there is no single definition of “healthy”. Is this the healthiest smoothie in the world? It depends on who is drinking it. Here’s what they contain and how to change them to suit your body and health goals, according to Dr. Hyman.

The science behind smoothies

Hyman and the Function team have seen a similar story play out for hundreds of thousands of members: measurable health disparities, especially around metabolism and heart health. More than 65 percent of Function members have fasting insulin levels outside the optimal range (translation: the pancreas produces too much or too little insulin, causing blood sugar to become unbalanced). And more than half showed elevated ApoB, an important cardiac risk indicator that is typically overlooked by traditional physical exams. Dr Hyman said these results point to a common problem: many people have “silent” gaps in the way their bodies process sugar and fat, often because their diet does not suit their specific biological makeup. What’s more, more than 70 percent of Function members are deficient in at least one important nutrient, including B vitamins, vitamin D, omega-3 fats, iron, magnesium, or zinc.

Hyman and his team used these real-world findings to create “The Healthiest Smoothies in the World?” designed to fill the most common nutritional gaps. He selected 20 ingredients that aim to do some big jobs for the body: supporting the gut microbiome, calming inflammation, stabilizing blood sugar, and boosting metabolism. “To stabilize blood sugar and metabolism, we use chocho bean protein, MCT oil and Ceylon cinnamon, while inflammation and microbiome health are supported by a concentrated phytonutrient blend of wild blueberries, pomegranate and fresh herbs,” he explains. Combine high-quality protein, a blend of omega oils, and prebiotic fibers like green banana and flaxseed and what you get is more than just a regular smoothie; Dr Hyman says this is a complete food created to support the body’s key systems all at once.

So is this really the “World’s Healthiest Smoothie?”

While Erewhon’s latest viral product does contain amazing superfoods and fills common nutritional gaps, the question mark in the smoothie’s name makes a bigger statement about the health industry. “The question mark is the most important part of the name because it acknowledges something that the health food industry often ignores: health is not a universal label,” says Dr. Hyman. “To me, what is ‘healthiest’ depends entirely on a person’s unique biology, data, and metabolic needs.” Whether it’s a drink, exercise, or health trend, calling something “healthiest” doesn’t mean much if you don’t see the person drinking or doing it.

Dr Hyman aims to spark a broader discussion about how “healthy” is a personal metric. You can only truly define it once you dig into your own health data—the numbers that give you insight into your body like blood sugar, cholesterol, inflammatory markers, gut health, nutrient levels, and hormone balance. To make the healthiest choice for you, Dr. Hyman suggests that you need personal insight to see what truly suits your unique biology.

How to make “The Healthiest Smoothie in the World?” At home

Hyman, there are three non-negotiables for the “World’s Healthiest Smoothie?”: high-quality protein, healthy fats, and a blend of phytonutrients (natural compounds found in plant foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and tea—that help protect cells, support the gut, and control inflammation). Avoid processed sweeteners and fillers that can increase blood sugar and slow metabolism. Everything else is flexible. Swap out vegetables, nuts, or fruit based on what you have on hand—the microbiome thrives on variety.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or other plant milk)
  • A handful of greens: arugula, spinach, or fresh herbs
  • ½ cup frozen wild blueberries
  • A small handful of walnuts (or any nuts/seeds you like)
  • Your protein of choice: chocho pea protein, whey, or plant-based powder
  • Optional extras: chia seeds, flax seeds, or a little MCT oil

How to make:

  1. Pour almond milk into a blender.
  2. Add greens and herbs for nutrition and a hint of bitterness.
  3. Throw in frozen berries and nuts for antioxidants and healthy fats.
  4. Add your protein and any other optional extras.
  5. Blend until smooth and creamy.

What No to add

“Many commercial smoothies contain hidden sugars from excessive fruit juice or honey, which can cause a significant spike in fasting insulin,” says Dr. Hyman. She also suggests avoiding “aesthetic-only” superfoods or fillers that look good on Instagram but don’t do much for your body. Ignore what’s trendy, and focus on ingredients that meet specific results based on your data, such as increasing your fiber intake with sources like raspberries, quinoa, or black beans, or prioritizing quality fats to support heart health (for example: avocado, salmon, and flaxseed).

How to personalize a smoothie for you

Just guessing what your body needs won’t help you. “The best way to adjust your nutrition is to move beyond guesswork and toward precision by looking at your actual lab results,” advises Dr. Hyman. Let’s say your Function insights show elevated hs-CRP (CRP (C-reactive protein), aka your liver inflammation red flag). You can add anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger and omega-rich oils to your smoothie. If you want to avoid sugar spikes and keep your energy steady throughout the day, she recommends focusing on protein and MCT oil to keep insulin levels steady. “Understanding your own data allows you to turn generic prescriptions into targeted tools for your long-term health.”
